Africa is no longer waiting for the world to solve its healthcare challenges—we are solving them ourselves through innovation. Across the continent, innovators are developing cutting-edge health technologies that solve local healthcare challenges and pave the way for global advancements. Fueled by collective efforts from various stakeholders, we are committed to addressing Africa's health challenges with locally developed solutions.
Transforming African MedTech Conference (TAMC) is an event that brings together key stakeholders, innovators and leaders across Africa organised by Villgro Africa. This year’s conference provided a dynamic platform for discussion to explore how Africa’s healthcare landscape is changing—and what needs to be done to accelerate that change. The Ifakara Innovation Hub as partners for the TAMC 2024, we were honoured to contribute to these critical conversations and showcase Tanzania’s movement toward advancing medical technology solutions that meet the continent's unique healthcare needs.
The IIH represented by the Director, Masoud Mnonji was invited to be part of panel discussion on overcoming barriers in MedTech. In his keynote address, Masoud emphasised addressing these barriers through strategic partnerships that bridge the gap between different sectors. By fostering collaboration and ensuring that all players—from startups to policymakers—are on the same page, we can create an ecosystem that supports the rapid deployment of medical technologies that save lives. Moreover, different participants emphasised that there’s a need to ensure that the people in charge of approving, regulating and adopting these innovations are aligned with the innovators. This means simplifying regulatory processes and promoting local capacity-building initiatives.
In yet another discussion, IIH moderated a discussion that showcased Tanzania’s MedTech efforts. Joined by other panellists, Praygod Japhet from the Tanzania Startup Association (TSA) and Amina Nyuri, innovator of Mama Check shared real experiences from Tanzania and lessons learnt. The panel discussion highlighted how public-private partnerships have played a vital role in creating an ecosystem where MedTech startups such as Mama Check – a rapid diagnostic tool for preeclampsia can thrive.
One key insight that emerged from the discussion was the power of collaboration. Whereby private sectors, regulatory agencies and startups work together to streamline processes and create a conducive environment for MedTech development. This environment is essential to ensuring local solutions reach those who need them most.
While the potential for innovation in Africa is immense, there are still significant challenges that slow down the development and adoption of medical technologies. One of the biggest hurdles is the knowledge gap between different stakeholders. Often, this lack of understanding leads to delays in getting life-saving healthcare solutions approved and into hospitals and clinics.
Furthermore, TAMC not only served as a platform for insightful discussions but also provided valuable opportunities for startups to showcase their innovations. During the startup pitching sessions, some of our startups in the health portfolio—Lab X, PlusLife, and Mama Check—took the stage to present their groundbreaking solutions aimed at solving critical healthcare challenges. These sessions not only offered a unique chance for these innovators to connect with potential partners and investors but also, the sessions were a testament to the already existing efforts by different stakeholders to transform the African MedTech landscape.
The TAMC 2024 highlighted that Africa has the talent and creativity to address its healthcare challenges, but collaboration is key to sustaining this momentum. By building stronger partnerships between startups, governments, and international stakeholders, we can overcome barriers, streamline regulatory processes, and ensure the rapid deployment of life-saving medical technologies. The future of African healthcare will depend on how well we work together to turn innovative ideas into lasting, impactful solutions. Let’s continue to join forces to create a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
