From March 19th to 21st, 2025, a defining moment unfolded in the evolution of the Ifakara Innovation Hub (IIH) as we officially ushered in a new governance structure with the inauguration of our Board of Trustees. This three-day event not only celebrated the transition from the outgoing Executive Committee to a formal Board of Trustees but also reaffirmed our commitment to institutional maturity, visionary leadership, and long-term sustainability.
The induction program kicked off with a guided tour of IIH facilities and partner spaces, offering our new Board members an immersive introduction into the heartbeat of the Hub. It was more than just an orientation—it was an invitation into the story of IIH, its community, and the incredible journey that lies ahead.
During the tour, the Board had the opportunity to engage directly with innovators from our two flagship portfolios: rural livelihoods and health innovation. From agri-tech startups empowering farmers to medical device innovators tackling pressing healthcare challenges, the passion and progress on display resonated deeply. Board members were visibly inspired by the stories of determination and impact unfolding across these ventures.
The tour extended beyond IIH's walls into our ecosystem. Considering that the IIH established a relationship with IHI, the board managed to visit some of the IHI's facilities (the vector sphere and laboratory) that showcased the powerful link between science and innovation. These sites illustrated how research infrastructure and scientific excellence can be transformed into solutions that address the needs of underserved communities. The Board witnessed firsthand the collaborative force between IIH and its founding institution—a partnership anchored in shared purpose.
The induction also included stops at our dynamic partner makerspaces, Robotech and Bongotech. Here, the board members observed how locally-driven innovation is being brought to life. These hubs, equipped with prototyping tools and collaborative workspaces, exemplify the infrastructure needed to support startup growth and tangible product development. The Board gained a clearer picture of how IIH supports entrepreneurs from idea to impact.
The three-day program led up to the first official meeting of the Board of Trustees, a key moment in shaping the Hub's future direction. Discussions focused on strategic priorities, resource mobilization, and strengthening IIH’s footprint across Tanzania and beyond.
Our newly appointed Board of Trustees brings together a diverse, passionate, and experienced group of individuals:
- Mr. Jones Mrusha: Digital transformation pioneer and influential leader in Tanzania's innovation ecosystem.
- Mr. Albino Kalolo: Lecturer at SFUCHAS and champion for healthcare innovation.
- Ms. Catherine Shembilu: Managing Director at Vikapu Bomba and advocate for community-led innovation.
- Mr. Honorati Masanja: Chief Executive Director at Ifakara Health Institute and a key figure in the Hub's founding journey.
- Ms. Caroline Kandusi: Impact strategist and Program Lead at Segal Family Foundation.
Together, they embody the spirit and ambition of IIH.
We are excited about the wisdom, networks, and strategic guidance this Board will bring to our work. Their presence signals not just a continuation but an elevation of the Hub's mission to create inclusive, scalable solutions for Tanzania's rural and health challenges.
This induction wasn’t just a milestone—it was a celebration of vision, continuity, and of bold new beginnings.
